Whenever the sun is low and behind the bird think silhouette.
Silhouettes against a beautiful sky of pure colour are my favourite types of shot.
It is remarkably easy to do this.
Shoot during sunrise or sunset.
Position yourself so that the sun is anywhere in front of you.
Expose for the sky.
Anything darker than the sky (the bird) will be a silhouette.
To expose for the sky:
- Put your camera into manual mode.
- Point at the brightest part of the sky.
- Adjust for perfect exposure.
- Reframe so that the bird(s) are where you want them.
- Take the shot.
These types of shots are my favourite and always get a fantastic reaction.
